DISCO, a Formal Model of Serious Games to Help Teachers at the Design Stage

Authors:

Mathieu Vermeulen, Nadine Mandran and Jean-Marc Labat

Abstract: This paper proposes a formal model of serious game understandable and usable by teachers in higher education. Serious games are often mentioned in higher education, but their use is restricted other than for teachers always looking for renewal. Indeed, there is a lack of tools to facilitate their creation and use, especially for teachers. This article presents serious games of the type case study designed empirically. To overcome this empirical aspect, we derive a formal model of serious play and methodology closely associating teachers in the creative process. We want to improve no only the design stage but also the use of serious games produced by teachers with their students. This model, called DISCO, will be the basis of a current work including an experimental approach taking into account the context of the job of teachers.

The Third Wave of Informatization - Mobile Learning and Social Networks in the Modern School for Upgrading the Educational Process

Authors:

Diana O. Koroleva

Abstract: This research project attempts to investigate the peculiarities of reactions of Russian schools to changes related to the incorporation of mobile learning and social networks in education, which implied not by the federal government as previously, but brought by students themselves as main users of Internet and mobile devices. Currently, 97 percent of Russian adolescents have they own mobile devices (D.Koroleva, 2016). Despite the official Ministry of Education ban K-12 students still use their cellular phones or tablets in schools. Social network sites are most popular resource among adolescents; they use this service for communication, distribution of information and its consumption. The obtained data shows that the usage of mobile technology is the indistinguishable process for adolescents due to both face-to-face and online communication. Thus, the social situation for child’s development is changing. Nevertheless, penetration of the online communication in everyday lives of school children is ignored by the compulsory education in Russia, and the educational potential of social networks is not considered. The study identified a new, third wave of education informatization, which is coming not from the state as previous ones, but provoked by students themselves as main users and owners of the mobile devices. We argue that this process of change have to be considered by educational stakeholders and policymakers. The research is based on Vygotsky's social constructivist theory (Vygotsky, 1978), and according to Creswell’s mixed methods research design (Creswell, 2005).

Model of Articulation between aLDEAS Assistance Rules

Authors:

Le Vinh Thai, Stéphanie Jean-Daubias, Marie Lefevre and Blandine Ginon

Abstract: The AGATE project proposed the SEPIA system that allows an assistance designer to define assistance systems added in target application. In Interac-tive Learning Environments, such assistance systems are useful to promote the acquisition of knowledge. These assistance systems consist of a set of aLDEAS rules. The articulation between these rules was expressed until now implicitly in the aLDEAS language. Our study of assistance in existing appli-cations shows that the articulation between the rules of assistance can take many forms. We propose in this paper firstly a model of articulation between assistance rules with the five modes of articulation that we have identified. We also present our implementation of this model in the SEPIA system. This model makes explicit and facilitates the definition of articulation between the rules of an assistance system.
