Brief Bio
Beno Csapó is a Professor of Education (1997-) at the University of Szeged, the head of the Doctoral School of Education (2003-), the Research Group on the Development of Competencies, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2000-), and the Center for Research on Learning and Instruction he founded in 2003. He was a Humboldt research fellow at the University of Bremen (1989) and at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California (1994-95). He has been participating in several international research programs including the Developing democratic character (Institute for Educational Inquiry, University of Washington, 1997-99) project. He was a member of the Problem Solving Expert Groups for the 2003 and 2012 OECD PISA surveys. He was the leader of the Technological Issues Working Group in the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills initiative (2009-2010). He was a member of the PISA Governing Board (2005-14, vice chair: 2008-14). He is a member of the Educational Committee (1990-) and the Presidential Committee on Public Education (co chair 2017-) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences). He is the editor of Magyar Pedagógia (1991-). He launched the National Conference on Educational Research in Hungary and was the chair of the first conference in 2001. He is a member of the editorial board of Learning and Instruction, International Journal of Educational Research, Thinking Skills and Creativity, Cambridge Journal of Education, Journal of Education for Teaching, and Educational Assessment. He is a member of several international research associations. He was twice an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (1997-2001) and he was the president of the 12th Biennial Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction (Budapest, 2007). His has published over 300 books, book chapters and research papers, and among others, co-edited the books Teaching and learning thinking skills (1999) and The nature of problem solving: Using research to inspire 21st century learning (2017). He received the Doctor Honoris Causa degree from the University of Helsinki in 2019. ... More >>
