Demos

Demonstrations provide researchers and practitioners with an exciting and interactive opportunity to present their systems, artifacts and/or research prototypes, either at a regular session or at the technical exhibition. In any case, it is required to avoid a commercial format, even if the demo consists of presenting a business product or service. Instead, the presentation should focus on technical aspects.
Any written support materials may be distributed locally but not published in the proceedings. Authors who already present a paper at the conference may apply for a demonstration, to complement but not to replace their paper presentation. Demonstrations can also be made by sponsor companies or as a mixed initiative involving researchers and industrial partners.
Demonstrations are based on an informal setting that encourages presenters and participants to engage in discussions about the presented work. This is an opportunity for the participants to disseminate practical results of their research and to network with other applied researchers or business partners.

Concerning the format of the demo, we can accommodate it either as a demonstration in a booth (physical area of 4 sq. meter, with a table and 2 chairs) at the exhibition area, as a poster or as a 20 min oral presentation at a session especially set up for demonstrations. It is also possible to organize the presentation of the same demo in more than one format. Please contact the event secretariat.

Digitizing Assessments – Experiences from Two Universities

April 22, Session 3 - Room 3B

Lecturer

Steffen Skovfoged
Independent Researcher
Denmark

Brief Bio
Steffen Skovfoged is co-founder and director of UNIwise and the cloud-based digital exam platform WISEflow. The platform has been developed in cooperation with some of the leading Scandinavian universities, and over the last two years, it has been adopted by more than 50 HEI institutions and has acquired more than 550,000 users. It is now being used in Scandinavia, Germany, and UK, and acceptance is extending in both Europe and Asia. It was awarded Startuo of the year 2013 and Winner of Openaxel 2014. Before founding the company in 2012 Steffen Skovfoged had a 15-year-long career in the university sector, as Head of Quality Assurance and Director of Studies and Development at Aarhus University, Denmark. He was among others responsible for the successful adoption of the honorary ECTS-label distinction and the development of the university Quality Assurance policy and system.
Abstract
Digitizing exams has great advantages for universities. UNiwise's e-assessment solution WISEflow has been shown to significantly reduce the university's costs on administrative time and paper handling, it offers academics a structured and secure tool for providing individual feedback on student papers and it boosts student satisfaction numbers. Students are overall ready to adopt it and they do so using their own computers and devices. However, the transformation from pen&paper based assessments and exams to digital assessments and exams is not so much about the software. First of all it requires executive management anchoring, strategicengagement and a mature organisation. With case studies from the implementation of WISEflow at a Danish and a UK university in the period of 2014-2016, this talk will go through the different outcomes and models of implementation and highlight some of the practical and organisational aspects that universities need to consider as they begin transforming from analog to digital assessment and exams.
