Brief Bio
Dr. Alexander Mikroyannidis is a Research Associate in the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University UK. He holds a PhD in Informatics from Manchester Business School, an MPhil in Computation from the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST), and a BEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece. His research areas of interest are related with knowledge management and applications of Semantic and Social Web technologies in Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL). Recently, he has been investigating Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) and the challenges involved in the adoption of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) by the lifelong learner. He has also been working on the production of online courses and Open Educational Resources (OERs), delivered through various educational platforms, such as interactive eBooks. Dr Mikroyannidis has contributed to several projects of the 5th, 6th, and 7th Framework Programme of the European Community, notably weSPOT (ICT-2012-318499), Euclid (ICT-2012-296229), ROLE (ICT-2009-231396), DEMO-net (ICT-2006-27219), CASPAR (ICT-2005-33572), and PARMENIDES (IST-2001-39023).

SCOPE

Cloud Learning Environments (CLEs) or Cloud Education Environments (CEE) consider the cloud as a large ecosystem, which is not owned by any educational organization. Within this ecosystem, learners and educators act as the users and producers of cloud-based learning services. They have complete control over the choice, use and sharing of the learning tools and content provided by these services. This approach has the potential to enable and facilitate both formal and informal learning. It allows learners to learn anywhere and at anytime. It also facilitates collaboration among learners and educators. Additionally, the openness, sharing and reusability of learning tools and content on the web are technically enabled and promoted.

The working session will focus on the exchange of relevant trends and research results, as well as the presentation of practical experiences gained while developing and testing cloud education environments, both from a teaching and a learning perspective.
