CO-CHAIRS

Italo Masiello
Linnaeus University
Sweden

Brief Bio
I am Professor of Educational Technology at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, Linnaeus University, Växjö, Sweden. My research focuses on learning analytics, implementation sciences and learning effectiveness. The research group I lead is interdisciplinary and brings together education, psychology, design, computer and technology sciences. I am responsible for the master’s program in Educational Technology. I previously worked with Medical Education, MedTech and Innovation and bring that knowledge with me in a new and large research program named Educational Technology in Schools. The program aims to change teachers' everyday practice and improve students' school results. This will be done by means of data-informed support and analysis combined with systematic competence development in close collaboration with teachers, school leaders and EdTech companies.
John Rack

Brief Bio
John Rack is docent in the department of Pedagogy and Learning at Linnaeus University. He has a background as a researcher in the field of reading and learning difficulties and as a practicing Educational Psychologist, before moving into teacher training and policy advisory roles, and finally back into research within the field of assistive technology and accessibility in general. As a psychologist, John has worked extensively with assessment data and the design of individualized learning plans, and with supporting teachers in providing inclusive and accommodative teaching practices and environments.

SCOPE

Artificial intelligence has received massive attention in education and is revolutionizing how we do research. Large language models can be used to analyse qualitative data quickly. We need to ask, however, whether the outputs are providing a full picture and to understand differences and similarities depending on the techniques used.

In this special sessions we discuss the complementarity among the interpretations produced by the different analytical methods, underscoring the potential of automated methodologies in educational research. Contributions should focus on how different approaches are effective in generating data queries and hypothetical insights. One aim of this special session is to promote reflection and discussion on the use of automated vs traditional methodologies as well as to highlight areas of concordance.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Emerging Qualitative Methods of Analysis
  • Artificial Intelligence in Research Methods
  • Automated Qualitative Analysis
  • Semi-automated Qualitative Analysis
  • Large Language Model and Chat-bots for Qualitative Analysis
