Workshop on The Effect of Presence on Learning in Virtual Reality: Cognitive, Social, and Affective Dimensions - PLVR 2027

16 - 18 April, 2027 - Rome, Italy

In conjunction with the 19th International Conference on Computer Supported Education - CSEDU 2027

CO-CHAIRS

Jean-Christophe SAKDAVONG
University of Toulouse, Laboratoire CLLE (UMR5263)
France

Short Bio
Dr. Jean-Christophe Sakdavong is an Associate Professor (Maître de Conférences Hors Classe) in Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology at the University of Toulouse - Jean Jaurès, France, and a tenured member of the CLLE Laboratory (CNRS). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science (1996) and has developed a unique dual expertise at the intersection of Interactive Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology. His research program extensively investigates the cognitive and affective foundations of human interaction in Extended Reality (XR). Specifically, he focuses on how embodied action, bodily-self consciousness, and social presence mediate episodic memory, cognitive load, and Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in immersive environments. Dr. Sakdavong currently acts as the scientific coordinator of the "Apprentissage VR360" project and scientific director for the DEFINUM LEARN industrial partnership focusing on vocational training in VR. Dr. Sakdavong currently acts as the scientific coordinator of the "Apprentissage VR360" project and scientific director for the DEFINUM LEARN industrial partnership focusing on vocational training in VR. He serves as a Review and Guest Editor for Frontiers in Computer Science, Virtual Reality and Psychology. He has published widely in top-tier international venues such as Computers in Human Behavior and International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. In addition to his research, he co-directs the Master eFEN (e-Learning and Digital Environments) program and teaches experimental methodology. Related Experiences: Co-director of the "Immersive Environments" axis at the SFR-AEF research structure. Guest Editor for Frontiers in Computer Science/Virtual Reality/Psychology leading Research Topics on multisensory research and Self-Regulated Learning. Scientific Coordinator for numerous VR learning projects, including VR360 and DEFINUM LEARN. Regular reviewer for top educational technology journals and conferences, including Computer & Education, British Journal of Educational Technology.
Nathalie Huet
University of Toulouse, Laboratoire CLLE (UMR5263), France
France

Short Bio
Prof. Nathalie Huet is a Full Professor of Cognitive Psychology at the University of Toulouse - Jean Jaurès, France, and a member of the CLLE Laboratory (UMR 5263 CNRS). Her research expertise centers on self-regulated learning (SRL), metacognition, and motivational factors in computer-based learning environments. She has extensively studied help-seeking behaviors and the impact of cognitive and affective variables on learning performance within interactive systems. Currently, she co-directs several doctoral research projects investigating the integration of Generative AI as a co-regulatory agent for SRL, as well as the effects of interactivity and presence on learning in Virtual Reality. She serves as a Guest Editor for Frontiers in Computer Science, leading a Research Topic on Self-Regulated Learning. Professor Huet has published numerous articles in top-tier international journals such as Computers in Human Behavior. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges cognitive psychology and educational technology, making significant contributions to the design and evaluation of immersive and interactive learning systems. Related Experiences: Extensive supervision of PhD research focusing on Virtual Reality, AI, and cognitive psychology. Guest Editor for Frontiers in Computer Science (Research Topic on Self-Regulated Learning). Collaborator on multiple funded research projects (e.g., ANR CEAGMATIC, ANR COMPETENCE) evaluating metacognitive tutoring and help-seeking in digital environments.

SCOPE

This workshop explores how psychological presence in immersive virtual environments directly impacts human learning. Moving beyond technological metrics, we investigate how spatial presence, bodily-self consciousness, and social presence mediate cognitive processing and episodic memory. Drawing on embodied cognition and self-regulated learning, the workshop addresses extraneous cognitive load challenges in VR. We invite researchers to share empirical studies, theoretical frameworks (e.g., extensions of the CAMIL model, Grounded Cognition, Attention Restoration Theory), and design guidelines (like the SRL-Framework) highlighting how aesthetic, social, and interactive factors shape user experience and instructional efficacy in Extended Reality (XR).

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Embodied Cognition and the Enactment Effect in VR
  • Bodily-Self Consciousness (Self-Presence) and Episodic Memory/Learning
  • Social Presence, Virtual Pedagogical Agents, and Self-Efficacy
  • Cognitive Load Regulation in Immersive Environments
  • Impact of Aesthetic and Multisensory Elements (XR) on Learning
  • Assessment Methods for Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in VR
